conjecture as in:

• ~ you need to see a word 20 times in context to acquire it
• +~ chess masters store about 20k chunks, comparable to avg. English speaker's vocab
• ↓ maybe a lot more stuff is like vocab; maybe you acquire a chess chunk by seeing it in context 20 times; maybe lots of perceptual learning is like this

the word "context" is doing a lot here; I reckon we need meaningful context (which sort of tastes like i+1 as opposed to i+999...)
